Autoimmune Disease
Autoimmune diseases occur when an individual’s immune system attacks “self” rather than “nonself” material. An autoimmune dysfunction that is strongly associated with recurrent pregnancy loss is the anti-phospholipid syndrome.
The molecular architecture of human cell walls is primarily determined by phospholipids. The phospholipids within the cell membrane form a bilayer (about 40 angstrom units thick) with their hydrophobic (water avoiding) tails (red) on the inside of the bilayer and the hydrophilic (water seeking) heads (green) facing water on both sides of the bilayer.
