Autoimmune Disease
The cell wall (membrane) contains various kinds of protein molecules and embedded cholesterol (yellow), which are used to function normally (eg., for growth and intercellular communication).
Antibodies directed against phospholipids within the cell membrane are a large and varied group of immunoglobulins. Many of these antiphospholipid antibodies have been identified and include immunoglobulins against: cardiolipin (the most widely recognized anti-phospholipid antibody involved in recurrent pregnancy loss), phosphatidyl-serine, phosphatidyl-inositol, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine, phosphatidyl-choline, and phosphatidyl-glycerol.
