Bicornuate Uterus

Radiograph of a hysterosalpingogram that demonstrates a deep central symmetrical wedge shaped filling defect within the uterine cavity extending from the fundus toward the cervix and bilateral tubal patency. This is the classic appearance of either a septate or bicornuate uterus. It is not possible to reliably distinguish a septate uterus from a bicornuate uterus on hysterosalpingography (or hysteroscopy) alone. Further information that can be used to identify which of these two possibilities is actually present (in particular cases) can be obtained with either further radiologic tests (such as an MRI) or direct visualization (surgery such as laparoscopy).
