Clinical Evaluation

Cervical Incompetence

When cervical incompetence is identified, the cervix is often surgically sewn closed using thick nonabsorbable suture or a Mersilene band. During placement of a McDonald’s cerclage, the cervix is visualized and pulled down with a grasper while suture (green) is placed high in the corners of the cervix (red pointing fingers) and tied tightly. Normally, this results in closure of an otherwise incompetent cervix. The cerclage must be removed prior to a vaginal delivery.
