DES exposure in utero

DES exposure in utero is possible for women who were conceived through 1971 (in the year 2000 these women may be as young as 28 years old, if delivered in 1972). Various abnormalities in the shape of the uterine cavity following DES exposure have been described, typically as a result of an incomplete resorption of the lateral walls of the uterus (green).

Surgical transection of the lateral walls of the uterine cavity (green) is very dangerous, since the major uterine vessels course through this tissue and massive bleeding can be encountered.
