Pulsatile Progesterone and LH Concentrations

During the luteal phase (from ovulation to menses) of the menstrual cycle the ovarian corpus luteum cyst produces progesterone in response to LH stimulation. At the end of the luteal phase, LH concentrations fall and progesterone production within the ovary may be “rescued” by hCG (the pregnancy hormone) if the woman becomes pregnant.

This diagram is based upon data collected by Dr.Michael R. Soules. The rise and fall of progesterone concentrations during pulses lag closely behind changes in LH concentration during pulses, as seen in the bloodwork from this normally cycling woman.
