Inversions
Inversions occur when there are two breaks within one chromosome and the “broken segment” reattaches in an inverted position. If the centromere is included in the inverted segment then the inversion is called “pericentric.” Since chromosomes with inversions often have a normal total number of genes, the carriers of these inversions often have a normal appearance. However, meiosis may not proceed normally for those with inversions so that the offspring of affected individuals may have a high rate of lethal mutations (leading to pregnancy loss).
